CONWAY - A Conway woman recovers at a Wilmington hospital after someone shot her in the head and stole her car.




Police say a 14 year old male, shot 32-year-old Danielle Delpercio after she agreed to give the teen a ride.

When news spread that she was shot shock went through her tight knit group of friends.

“I was just scared for her, her fiancé, her family, and especially for her daughter,” said Chris Carr, a friend of Delpercio.

Chris and Danielle met five years ago when they began acting together at the Theatre of the Republic.

“She’s become a quite valued member of our theatre community,“ said Carr.

Delpercio was approached by a young black male at the gas station.

After she agreed to give him a ride the juvenile suspect began making sexual advances towards her and then pulled out a gun.

She tried to run the car off the road but was shot behind her right ear.

The young mother fled on foot a nearby neighborhood, called the police, and was later airlifted to the hospital.

Miraculously, she is expected to be okay.

“This could have ended in such a different way that would have been devastating but thank god that it didn’t,“ said Carr.

Delpercio’s friends said grace is the reason their friend is alive today.

“We’re going to get to have her. We get her back,” said Carr. “We’re going to get to keep her, and she’s going to remain here with us, and that’s the best part of it.“

Doctors at New Hanover Regional Medical Center have chosen to leave the bullet in Delpercio’s head.

They said the risk of removing it is worse than leaving it where it is.

Delpercio does not have health insurance, so the theatre has set up a fund in her name to help with her medical costs.

A woman was hospitalized early Sunday morning after Conway Police say a 14-year-old shot her during a carjacking at an area gas station.

The victim has been identified as Danielle Delpercio, a cast member of Conway's Theatre of the Republic.

According to Conway Police spokeswoman Catina Hipp, the carjacking occurred at the Sav-Way station at 604 Church St. Delpercio told officers that while at the gas station, a young male asked her for a ride. While in the car, he began making sexual advances towards her and then pulled out a handgun.[the muh dik tells you it was a nigger, besides who ever heard of a 14 year old White kid doing a carjacking? She then tried to run the car into a ditch to distract the suspect. He fired one shot, hitting her on the right side of the head before she was able to jump from the vehicle and flee.

Delpercio was taken to Conway Medical Center and later airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where she is still recovering.

"It' just put's everything into perspective," said Shellie Cox, a friend of the victim. "I'm a mother too, it just lets you know it could happen anytime, anywhere."

According to Conway Police, officers spotted the victim's car around 1 a.m. Sunday morning being driven by the suspect on 9th Avenue. He wrecked the car on a dead end street and was later apprehended.

He is currently being held at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.

The Theatre of the Republic has set up a fund to help with Delpercio medical costs as she does not have insurance. Anyone who would like to contribute can contact the theater in Conway.

"You know you hear this happen on the news all the time, but when it hits you so close to home it's pretty shocking," said Tim McGhee, the executive director of the theatre.

The 14-year-old boy, who is charged with attempted murder and carjacking with great bodily injury, appeared in Judge Lisa Kinon’s court room today to voluntarily agree to a 10-day detention at the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice Center in Columbia.
The 10-day detention will allow for the court to medically evaluate him and continue the investigation, said attorney Ryan Stampfle, the juvenile’s guardian.
Stampfle said in 10 days the juvenile will have another hearing to decide if the court needs more time or if they are ready to move on with the case.
Caroline Fox, with the 15th Circuit Solicitors Office, said the juvenile had a previous charge this year for being uncontrollable and incorrigible.
The juvenile said during the hearing that he was also kicked out of school a while back, but didn’t remember exactly when.
Paul Rathbun, the juvenile’s attorney, asked the court to give the juvenile a neurological evaluation and to see if he requires any medication due to his recent erratic behavior.
“His judgment and his behavior are 180 degrees different,” Rathbun said.
The juvenile’s father said after the hearing that his son is innocent and he hopes things get cleared up soon.
Friends of DelPercio said she is doing well, but needs the support of the community. DelPercio is an active volunteer with Careteam and a cast member for the Theater of the Republic in Conway.
Gene Broyles, a friend of DelPercio and co-host of Dining with Friends for Careteam, said she is doing well despite the circumstance.
“She is still in intensive care and is closely being monitored, but she is talking and has normal motor skills and no brain damage,” he said. “The doctors even said that if someone had to be shot in the head, where Danielle was shot was the best place because it didn’t leave too much damage. We are all just happy she is doing well.”
According to Conway Police spokesperson Catina Hipp, officers were called to a home on Lakeside Drive for a possible shooting.
At about 10:30 p.m. Saturday when officers arrived at the residence, they found the DelPercio holding a rag to her head and bleeding profusely.
DelPercio told police that she while at the Sav-Way gas station at 604 Church St. a young black male asked her for a ride and she agreed.
While following the directions the male was giving her, DelPercio said he started making sexual advances towards her and then pulled out a handgun, according to a police press release.
DelPercio said that she tried to run the car into a ditch and then into a tree in an attempt to distract him so she could get away, according to a police press release.
She then told police the male fired one shot into the right side of her head and she was able to jump from the car and run to a residence on Lakeside Drive.
The homeowners opened the door, helped DelPercio and called 911, according to a police press release.
DelPercio said the male drove away in her car.
She was then transported to Conway Medical Center for treatment and later air lifted to to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for further treatment.
The residents that helped DelPercio wished to not comment on the incident.
Shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, officers spotted DelPercio’s car being driven by a young black male on 9th Avenue. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and the vehicle wrecked at the dead end of 6th Avenue. The subject driving the vehicle then fled from the vehicle on foot toward Nelson Street and was later apprehended, according to a police press release.
The suspect is still in custody at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice Center in Columbia.
Johanna Haynes, executive director of Careteam, said DelPercio is an awesome supporter and volunteer with Careteam.
“She has co-hosted Dining with Friends for the last three years and this past year they were able to raise $5,090 for Careteam,” she said. “She is one tough lady. Whatever she does she is passionate about and we love and appreciate her.”
Broyles also said what an avid volunteer DelPercio was with her many ventures.
“We have done the Dining with Friends party together for the past three years and it is her determination that has helped us raise so much money,” she said. “I just hope that her determination in life will help her out with this situation.”
The Theater of the Republic has set up a fund for DelPercio to help with the medical costs at BB&T bank and the Theater of the Republic is also taking cash and check donations at their office.
Tim McGhee, executive managing director for the Theater of the Republic, said DelPercio is a great support of theater, a great dancer and an asset to the group.
“Ever since she got on stage for first time about five or six years ago, she and her family have tried to do at least two shows a year,” he said.
McGhee said the Theater of the Republic decided to help DelPercio because of her dedication and the cost associated with her injuries.
“After something so tragic as a bullet into the back of a head, we wanted to help,” he said. “We know she has no insurance and will be off work for a while. She is also planning to get married in October, so the tragedy came at a very bad time, but then when is being shot ever a good time.”

She's lucky all she has are minor injuries.

A Conway woman whose good deed turned into a nightmare last weekend is now speaking about the ordeal.

Danielle DelPercio says she had just left the Theatre Republic to stop for gas at Sav-Way on Church Street in Conway when a young boy approached her car.

"He said, 'Well I'm stranded and I need a ride and I was wondering if you could drop me off,'" DelPercio recalled. "It's just not something that I normally do, but he seemed very helpless."

DelPercio says her motherly instincts kicked in and she agreed to give him a ride.[that's a mistake in dealing with niglets]

"I have a 12-year-old daughter, and not that I would ever put her in that position, but I would hope that someone would help her," DelPercio said. "He was a very polite, well mannered, young person, then when we got to the house, he pulled the gun out and his voice deepened."

DelPercio says the teen held her at gunpoint, ordering her to turn over her purse and credit cards. She says she didn't hesitate to turn her things over, but when she tried to leave the car, things turned ugly.

"I started to open the door to get out and he said, 'No, I want you in the car; shut the door,'" she said. "As I sped up and was turning the car, that's when he shot the gun and it shot me right in the back of the head."

DelPercio says the bullet went through her ear, bounced off her skull and now rests between her lower neck and spine.

"All of the doctors have said it's a miracle, it's an absolute miracle," DelPercio said.

Her mother, Diane Fouquet, says the family could not be more relieved and grateful.

"God's hand was in it because at the hospital one of the neurosurgeons said that it was really lucky the way it happened because she could have been brain dead or paralyzed," said Fouquet.

DelPercio's 14-year-old suspected attacker is in custody at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice Center in Columbia. He will be charged with attempted murder and carjacking.

Because of his age, he will likely be charged as a juvenile, but DelPercio's says she would like to see justice.

"He shot me. He didn't just pull a gun on me and try to scare me," DelPercio commented. "I think this was very well planned. He was waiting for somebody to arrive that night. If it wasn't me it would have been someone else."

A 14-year-old boy is on suicide watch and will continue to be in custody as the court prepares for a hearing to possibly move the case to general sessions court after the boy shot a woman in the head and took her car.
The boy has been charged with attempted murder and carjacking with great bodily injury.
Caroline Fox, attorney with the 15th Circuit Solicitors Office, said the state has filed a motion to have the case moved to general sessions court and to add a kidnapping charge to the case.
The juvenile appeared in court today after a 10-day detention in which the Department of Juvenile Justice did a preliminary psychiatric exam to determine if he is fit to proceed in court.
The juvenile’s attorney Paul Rathbun told Judge Ronald Norton that he would like to continue with Judge Lisa Kinon’s previous order for a neurological exam and get an in-depth psychiatric evaluation for the juvenile.
“He hears voices, has cut himself, is suicidal and has attempted suicide twice,” Rathbun told the judge.
Rathbun also requested that no one, including psychologists, be able to question the juvenile about the case without an attorney present.
“I don’t know if he is capable to decide,” he said.
A visiting judge will see the juvenile in court scheduled for Sept. 21 to decide whether the case should be moved to general sessions.
The victim, Danielle DelPercio, of Conway, is out of the hospital and was in the courtroom today to witness the hearing.
“Seeing him was really weird since I haven’t seen him since that night,” she said. “I didn’t expect it to affect me so much. I feel good that he is going to remain in jail though.”
DelPercio said she is feeling better from her injuries, but has another doctor’s appointment in the middle of July.
“I don’t know yet if I will need to have surgery,” she said.
