As a mother pleads for justice in the murder of her son, Mayor Daley is making a fiery plea of his own, aimed directly at the African-American community. CBS 2's Suzanne LeMignot reports.
Both Mayor Daley and the Rev. Jesse Jackson made passionate pleas Saturday for an end to the violence plaguing the city, and for the code of silence following crimes to end.
The mother of 13-year-old Robert Freeman joined the Rev. Jesse Jackson at Rainbow PUSH this morning. Freeman was shot 13 times. Police say they know who is responsible for his murder and they're actively looking for the suspect.[wow, da niglet got one bullet for each year]
Jackson says while a news conference about Freeman's death was taking place on Friday, another person was shot dead just six blocks away from where the 13-year-old was murdered.
"No one wants to expose the killers, which means that to conceal the identities is to become a sanctuary for terrorism, and for drugs and for guns. That must end," said Rev. Jackson.
Mayor Daley was fired up while talking about the recent shooting death of Freeman. He spoke Saturday at the Chicago Public Schools Back to School Festival, stressing that parents have the responsibility of making sure their children follow the right path in life, adding that the community, churches and schools must also do their part.
"Look at these children. We should not be going to any funeral. We should not be going to any hospital to visit a child because some gangbanger didn't like your child and shot your child down on the street. That is not acceptable in our society," said Mayor Daley.
"This African-American community has fought a lot of fights in America to get where you are today. Do not allow that black gangbanger, or that dope dealer, threaten your child not to come to school, not to come to church or walk down the block, or come to a park. These are people right from the community. Now think about that. The code of silence kills your child."
A relative of Freeman's appreciated the mayor's blunt remarks.
"I think he's very correct and very right about what he's commenting on about the black community and the gang bangers and the drug dealers," LaKen Strong said near where his cousin was gunned down. "Something has to change."
Roseland resident Ken Taylor agrees, but says there's much more to the "code of silence" the mayor and other officials have complained about.
"The bottom line is we need more police in the neighborhood," Taylor said. "The code of silence that we talk about in the black community is basically a myth. You have to understand, we have to live here, long after these news vans, these police and these detectives have packed up and left."
Meantime, Police Supt. Jody Weis says detectives want to talk to more witnesses about Freeman's murder. He says a few have come forward, but many have not.
The police department said Saturday evening there were no developments in the case.
