David Fane's appearance at a high profile media event shocked his audience.

A top TV star unleashed a racist outburst at a high-profile media event this week - claiming that "Jews were expendable".

David Fane, one of the creators of bro'Town, told an audience including Jason Gunn, Mike Hosking, Kate Hawkesby and John Tamihere, that "Hitler had a right" and HIV sufferers deserved to be "roasted".

Fane, who is best known for film and TV roles including Outrageous Fortune, Sione's Wedding and Radiradirah, also hosts a breakfast show on radio station Flava.

His employers at the The Radio Network and TV3 were last night ducking for cover, with both refusing to apologise.

Fane made the tirade on Wednesday night at the inaugural Radio Roast at the exclusive Northern Club in Auckland.

He said: "You are the worst motherf*****s in the world, you agency guys," referring to advertising bosses in the audience.

He said: "I want to eat you, but I won't because I don't want to get HIV. Would you roast an HIV person? You'd roast them because they're expendable. Like the Jews. Hitler had a right, you know.

"You've all got f****** Aids, c****!"

The outburst has sparked outrage in New Zealand's Jewish community and among Aids health advocates.

New Zealand Jewish Council president Stephen Goodman demanded that Fane and his employers apologise.

He said the speech had parallels to Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic outburst in 2006.

"It is a very anti-Semitic statement," said Goodman. "While we wish to preserve the rights to freedom of speech he went over the line."

Goodman said the comment was heightened by the fact Fane was a role model.

"He is entitled to hold his own opinion and if this is what he truly believes, he should just keep his mouth closed."

Goodman said the council may demand action from The Radio Network if Fane failed to apologise, particularly if he was there in a work capacity.

"We would very much like to see an apology ... and a genuine one," he said.

New Zealand Aids Foundation executive president Rachael Le Mesurier said Fane's comments would have caused widespread outrage.

"I was aware there are a few individuals out there that hold prejudices like this. I think what he said would offend most New Zealanders.

"There is no place for prejudice against people living with HIV, homophobia, or anti-Semitism, in New Zealand," said Mesurier.

"I would assume he is getting advice recommending he apologise quickly."

Fane later denied he was anti-Semitic and said "some of my favourite friends are Jewish", including film director Taika Waititi.

Waititi, who has a Jewish mother, refused to comment.

Fane's boss at Flava, The Radio Network chief executive, John McElhinney, also refused to comment, as did TV3 publicist Nicole Wood.

Fane did not respond to requests for comment last night and there was no one in at his home in Pt Chevalier.

He added that while he found the Holocaust revolting, he believed that repeated mention of it was simply used to make people "feel guilty".

TV star resigns over anti-Semitic remarks

One of the creators of the iconic television show Bro'Town has resigned over racist and homophobic remarks he made at a media event in Auckland on Wednesday.

David Fane, who earlier apologised for his remarks and admitted he was intoxicated, has announced his resignation from TV3 and the Radio Network, saying he would rather resign than face being fired.

"I wanted to announce that I am resigning from my positions in TV and Radio effectively immediately," Fane told NZPA.

"I would rather announce this than face the embarrassment of being fired without having the chance to bow out gracefully."

The recent events had caused him a lot of suffering and resigning was "the best course and most honourable course of action to take".

Fane had earlier told NZPA that he had been drinking and had lost control when making the remarks.

"Yes, I was intoxicated during the speech. It must have affected my judgment. I wasn't in total control at the time the statements were made.

"Upon reflection, I was probably, at the time, thinking of what, in comedic circles is referred to as 'offensive humour' as opposed to anything serious," he said.

Fane said he would continue to work on independent projects to keep his fans happy.

My sympathies are with him. A whole career, a TV series, a generation of happy kids. And a few words about J*ws bring it all to an end.

Just think, if he'd stuck to abusing Whites, he would've been ok. Nothing would have happened to him.

Speaking of which, this will be funny to watch. Fiji has decided to oust Western [Jewish] control over their media. The instant result is demands for an economic boycott, and nothing has even happened yet.

Fiji orders Murdoch out of Fiji Times

Fiji's military regime has today given its most popular newspaper three months to remove media magnate Rupert Murdoch as its owner.

The Media Industry Development Decree, which requires media organisations to be 90 percent locally owned, came into effect today and will require Murdoch to relinquish the majority of his share in the Fiji Times, Fiji Live reported.

The head of the Attorney General's office in Frank Bainimarama's regime, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the Fiji Times would face closure if it did not comply with the decree.

"Fiji Times, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Limited, have been given three months from today to ensure they comply with the requirements of the media decree or cease operations all together," Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

New Zealand Media Freedom Committee secretary Tim Pankhurst said the measures were part of a disturbing trend towards dictatorship, and another reason why New Zealanders should boycott travelling to Fiji.

"I believe that individuals should take action against them [Fiji's military regime] by not holidaying in Fiji," Mr Pankhurst said.

Heavy handed actions the government had taken in the past indicated it could follow through on its threat to close the paper if it did not comply with the new measure, he said.

When the new measures were announced in April, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum described the newspaper as "the purveyor of negativity, at least for the past three years".

"This is a media organisation that does not recognise the government, does not call the prime minister the prime minister," he said.

Others measures included in the decree include establishing a tribunal to ensure nothing is printed or broadcast against the "national interest or public order," Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

The decree also makes media organisation's liable for fines of up to 100,000 Fiji dollars ($NZ71,245) for breaching content regulations. Journalists publishers and editors can also be fined.

The Fiji Times is Fiji's oldest and largest circulated newspaper and is wholly owned by Murdoch's News Ltd.

Does this mean the French Foriegn Legion is going to be hired or have to go rescue perhaps a French men who gets in trouble on purpose. Then if the French man gets him self arrested so as to give Fiji the New Caladonia treatment ?

I am not advocataing anything, but IMO the media types are perhaps capable of almost anything.

Little surprises me any more either when it comes to the media, Smedley.

Historically, whenever a nation shrugs off Jewish media control, "International condemnation" follows. They literally didn't matter until that moment.
Next comes a long series of lies, 'incidents', 'provocations', etc etc.
